some time ago, i stumbled on a blog that i fell in love with in a split second… http://sleepwalks9to5.livejournal.com

her style, her photos, her occassional food posts, i was inspired. and then i saw this knitted heart skirt that kept popping up in her posts and couldn’t help but fall in love with it. supposedly purchased from gmarket, i combed the entire site for 2 weeks but still failed to find something even close… :(

i gave up searching for it on gmarket and decided to make myself something similar instead. i did it over a span of two days, but the effort was well worth it. i’m a very happy bunny with my “upcycled” bodycon skirt, so i thought i’d do a little diy tutorial in case anyone else wants to have a go at it :)

1. starting with a plain bodycon skirt, i used foam hearts to gauge the position of where each heart should be stamped. (see, i really did this from scratch!)

2. all hearts aligned! (i know i missed out two when i took this photo)

3. i used a stack of foam hearts, glued them together to get a heart “stamp”. painted white fabric paint on the heart and stamped where each should be. it’s quite a tedious process cos i had to re-coat the stamp each time. you can’t just “ink” it like you would with a stamp pad cos fabric paint is thick and it might get messed up.

after i had stamped all the hearts, i had to individually paint a second coat. you could skip this if you’re happy with them looking quite faint. this was the part that took up the most time actually. i had to be very careful not to mess up the edges when i was filling them in. *phew*

4. all done! :)

so there, that’s what i got up to during the easter weekend cos i made a pact with myself to not go clubbing during holy week! i’m looking forward to hitting the dance floor again soon tho… i hope you girls enjoyed this little “tutorial”!

till my next post, which will be very soon (like later today), tooooodles!

from strangers to lovers, to strangers, again.

i was just feed-surfing on facebook last night and saw this video that my friend jason posted… it really summarizes relationships, in 16 minutes. true enough, almost every relationship goes through these stages, except for those that end in marriage.. even then, there is still that possibility of falling into the end stage.

the meeting, the chase, the honeymoon period, getting comfortable with each other which could be good or bad, tolerating each other, going down hill, and breaking up.

in any relationship, ultimately, there are only two possible “endings”. you either break up, or you get married. it’s one or the other…  c’est la vie.

sun lovin’ with sunplay!

to be honest, i’ve never been a fan of sunscreen cos i’ve always found it troublesome, period. i mean, seriously, toner, moisturiser, then we spend maybe a half hour getting all dolled up before heading out. squeezing in a minute or two to slap on sunscreen, and then having to get it all off your hands… grrrrrrrr see my point?

thesamplestore sent me two products that would possibly change my take on messy sunscreen. the first being the Super Block liquid formulation with the highest sun protection of SPF 130PA+++! (it’s the smaller of the two) it’s a white milky liquid that comes out of a “squeeze bottle”, but dries clear and is suitable for use on both face & body. it smells like most makeup bases i’ve tried, a tad.. chalky? i can’t quite figure it out but i wouldn’t worry much about the scent. it is waterproof, light & non-greasy, but i’m not sure if i’d want to use the sunscreen in addition to moisturizer before make up. it doesn’t say if it is non-comedogenic tho, so those especially with oily skin might want to think about using this on your face. this is Watson’s top selling sunscreen!

the second product would be the UV Body Mist Sunblock. i call it  “sun-salvation in a can”. this one has a light, citrusy scent which actually somewhat made me think of air freshener at first.. i haven’t been sun-burnt the past few weeks so i can’t really say if it is effective in soothing sun burnt skin. the cool sensation only lasted a split second when sprayed on… it’s not greasy, but it doesn’t exactly disappear into your skin either. but hey it’s my skin’s protection against the sun so i won’t complain too much. this one is both waterproof & sweat proof. perfect for when playing outdoor sports & taking a dip in the pool!

sunblock, in a spray can. no more messy cleanups, no time-consuming complains cos even if you’re rushing to leave home, it’s as easy as throwing the can in your bag and spraying it on when you get the chance to. suddenly, i have no excuse not to use sunscreen. :)

the Super Block SPF 130PA+++ (35g) retails for $17.20 & the UV Body Mist SPF 80PA+++(150ml) retails for $17.90

if you want to protect your skin from premature aging, spray on some Sunplay!

more salted caramel ♥-in’!

more photos from our food escapades! see that top scoop at the back? that’s the strawberry ice cream i mentioned in my previous post. no fancy food colors! told you! :P the rest is earl grey…

YES 3 SCOOPS OF EARL GREY! IT’S THAT GOOD! ♥♥♥

( mmmmmm… ice cream art? ) the ice cream melts pretty fast tho… that’s my only complain.

i love how they have all the “flavors” hanging on the wall. the cookies & cream one is particularly cute! when we were there on sunday i “re-noticed” the stout & chocolate flavour that i failed to take note of the first time we were there. stout & chocolate, seriously? i don’t even like stout to begin with but… if it has made it to an ice cream tub it might be worth a taste the next time around… i’m still very skeptical.

for more on salted caramel, please read ed’s review on cinnamonsin :)

♥ salted caramel (via cinnamonsin)

mmmmmmmm I’ve been waiting for ed to blog about this! I’ve been to salted caramel twice in…3 weeks? both times i had the earl grey ice cream… when we were there on sunday with mimi, we tried the strawberry ice cream which is unlike your typical scoop of strawberry ice cream! no fancy pink food colorings that’s for sure.. if affogato makes your scoop, or maybe you have no idea what an affogato is… read on, and enjoy! :)

Salted Caramel ED: 15 years ago, mini me would beg mom and dad politely with puss in boots eyes for ice cream. If I was a good boy, theyd buy me a paddle pop. (Zzz) Or maybe a waffle ice cream from ice cream uncle. What ever type of ice cream i would shut up and eat, and be a happy kid. I only realized Ive been fooled all my life when i had Swensons for the first time. On the contrary, kids these days are spoiled for choice for many new brands of ice cream. B … Read More

blueberry cream cheese muffins

sunday was the first time i ever baked muffins (i’m not joking). and i’m glad to say, they turned out pretty darn good. i couldn’t stop eating them the moment i popped them out of my new “bend ‘n’ bake” muffin tray. it’s an absolute god-sent.

i made tons, but after devouring most of it, some went to my sister & the kids & some to my friends (lucky bunch!) i am now left with less than 10 blueberry muffins in the oven that are begging to be eaten while my stomach is probably crying out “muffin overkill”.

earlier today i decided to try something with my muffins… pretty huh?

it looks more like a cupcake than anything, even the texture is more cupcake than muffin-like. but i don’t really care what i should call it… cupcakes, or muffins, as long as it’s good, i’m eating it!

i added more philly cream cheese on top before adding a dollop of wild blueberry jam. i really wish you all could taste it. i never expected my first muffin baking attempt to be this successful… *contented grin

i also baked a batch of apple cinnamon cherry muffins… but in comparison to the blueberry ones, these aren’t fantastic. i had one in the morning with warm apple sauce. it’s kinda like apple pie… speaking of which, i definitely need to get a spring form pan so i can bake pies more easily… hmmmmmm

i’m definitely gonna keep baking the blueberry muffins… maybe i’ll do a mixed berry one..  i’m thinking of trying coconut ones sometime soon since my parents are quite big fans of the coconut cake from big-o. not sure how coconut muffins will turn out tho..

…my mind is wandering, and all i can think of is going to the kitchen to get more muffins. in fact, i think i’ll do just that! ciao! :)

En Grill & Bar

gosh! i’ve been feeling like quite the glutton the past couple of weeks. i’ve either been hovering around the kitchen, or scooting around to fancy schmancy places. earlier this week, the original trio of the mentally corrupted foodies attacked En Grill & Bar.

In 25 years of my life, (okay almost 26), i’ve never really fancied sashimi. perhaps cos all my parents eat is salmon sashimi, and too much of it just doesn’t entice me… BUT! since i started stepping out of my food comfort zone, i must say, i am, quite possibly in love with sashimi. it’s my tastebuds’ new found love!

the serving was such that we each had a slice of everything… (really wished we had doubles!) in an instant all my prior reservations of having raw fish meat in my mouth vanished into thin air..

we ordered a plate of yakitori which consisted of 5 variations… tomato bacon cheese, chicken balls, enoki maki, ebi, and i can’t remember what the last one was called. who’d have thought cherry tomatoes go so well wrapped with bacon & cheese? (but then again you can’t really go wrong with anything that’s got bacon & cheese in it, can you?)

pasta at a japanese restaurant? i had my doubts at first but boy was i proven wrong. the sauce was creamy yet so very light. it is unlike your typical carbona pasta that causes your eating speed to slow halfway, you just want more and more with this one! and the texture of the spaghetti was simply perfect. sprinkled with seaweed shreds in pure japanese fashion! i’m definitely going back for seconds, and this time i want one to myself! :P

i’m gonna interrupt with a photo of mimi & me. cold sake ftw! mimi says she likes this photo cos i look cute. honestly, i look at it and all i notice is that my cheeks are getting chubby again.

ps : i made that turban headband from extra length of a dress that i altered.

now back to the food… next up, kurobuta pork and salmon carpaccio! the pork was a little on the dry side but yummy no doubt. the salmon could have been a little bit more salty, and i’ve never quite been a fan of rocket greens… but i must say they do a fair job in balancing out the taste.

now, what would a japanese place be without sushi?

crab rolls and ebi tempura crunchy rolls. these got abit messy cos they aren’t exactly “bite size” and tend to crumble quite abit. don’t expect to look elegant if you’re ordering this. i wouldn’t really worry tho, since food is meant to be enjoyed with anyone & everyone, especially loved ones. if your partner has issues with you looking “unglam” while savouring someone’s cooking, i say ditch him! (but please don’t say the advice came from me.)

you’d expect us to be too full from all that food, but noooo. i insisted we have dessert. i absolutely loved the green tea ice cream with azuki (red bean) pancakes. the custard pudding was pretty normal, i could easily make it at home so you might want to skip that. but the azuki pancakes are really worth trying altho a tad pricey.

overall, it was a great evening with great company.. the bill came up to slightly over $50 per person cos we had 2 “glass jugs” of sake and quite abit of food. sushi & sashimi is 50% off during happy hour (6pm-8pm on weekdays), and certain beverages are 30% off. i really hope i’m getting the deets right, i promise i’ll pay more attention to details from now on. i usually get too engrossed with the food to remember such things. (my bad!)

deviled eggs & honey pancakes

i had been craving deviled eggs for the longest time! think the last i had deviled eggs was when we went to Overeasy.. or was it Infusion? i can’t remember, but anyhoooos! i was really craving deviled eggs yesterday so i decided to make them for brunch earlier…

they’re actually really easy to make! i didn’t have bacon strips tho, so i used the canned luncheon meat with bacon as a sub. i know, i use luncheon meat ALOT! careful when you’re frying them tho, they tend to pop quite abit. (think popcorn)

if you can boil eggs, you can make deviled eggs, okay? this is a really simple version tho, just to satisfy my taste buds so don’t expect anything over the top. it’s basically just dishing out the egg yolk and adding mustard, mayo, a bit of butter, salt, and pepper. i don’t really measure everything so just taste as you go! you can add some hot sauce to up the “devil-level” if you want but i am more than happy with my “bacon bits”.

everyone knows i love pancakes. i made honey pancakes for a change today and loved it! there was something about the taste, now i’m thinking i want to make them again tomorrow.. they’re too good! plus the inside was nice and moist, a bit like muffins actually.. mmmmmmm

hope everyone’s holding up midweek, the weekend is creeping in, and i’m off to En for some japanese food lovin’ with Jones & Mimi tonight!

much pancake ♥, jean

love at first bite turn deadly addiction.

these things are the devil. i got jones to get me 5 boxes from marks & spencer yesterday before we went to greenwood for dinner. on the way to dinner, ed & i finished a whole box of it in the car.

last night when i got home i couldn’t resist the urge to open a second box. and i just finished the entire box about half an hour ago, all by my self. i’m now down to 2 boxes cos i gave one to ed…

Poached Egg On Toast With Fetta Cheese Salsa And Tangy Tuna (via cinnamonsin)

while mummy chose to watch her korean dramas before preparing lunch (and it was already 2pm), look what ed whipped up for himself! I refreshed my inbox and this post, along with photos of the most perfect poached egg i’ve ever seen stared me straight in the face… talk about depressing…

this is really turning into a love/hate thing… pppfftttt

Poached Egg On Toast With Fetta Cheese Salsa And Tangy Tuna ED: When I’m hungry, my instincts take over, and I’d go hunting for food. I’d prowl around the dinning table, into the kitchen, rummaging through kitchen cabinets and the fridge like a crazed scavenger. Sometimes I’d chance upon a lifeless box of packed food on the table, a deep threatening growl escapes my stomach, but that’s not what my delicate tummy hungers for. It hungers FRESH FOOD. So this predator decided to cook something with what ever … Read More
